Why energy communication is different

The people who speak for an energy company answer to regulators, investors, governments, local communities and a press that often starts from suspicion. Reassure one audience and you can provoke another.

When something goes wrong it goes wrong fast, in public, and on a scale that pulls in far more than the communication team. A spill or a safety incident can put operational leads, technical experts and regional managers in front of a camera within hours. All of them have to be ready.

When the company is a national oil company its people speak for a country as well as a business, and government, commerce and public affairs land in the same answer. We have been doing this work in energy longer than in any other sector.

What we train energy people for

Every programme is built for the situation your people will face, using your operations, your stakeholders and the stories they will be asked about.

Media training

Spokesperson development, with interview scenarios drawn from the energy stories your people will be asked about, several rounds on camera and a written trainer assessment for each participant so the head of communication knows how ready the team is.

Media training

Crisis communication

Three formats: crisis media skills for spokespeople, classroom training on crisis strategy for the communication team, and full simulations that test the whole response, standalone, inside an operational drill, or across several sites and languages at once.

Crisis communication

Public affairs

Public affairs and government relations for the people who negotiate licences, tariffs, safety findings and policy, and for the regulators on the other side of the table.

Public affairs

Public speaking and coaching

Public speaking training and one-to-one executive coaching for the leaders who present strategy, results and the transition story to investors, conferences and boards.

Public speaking and coaching

Corporate communication and ESG

Corporate communication and PR strategy, reputation and ESG communication: the disclosure rules and stakeholder expectations that now decide how energy companies are judged.

Corporate communication strategy

Internal communication

Internal and change communication for the large, dispersed operations that depend on engaging people across sites, shifts and countries.

How in-house training works

Most of our training is designed for one organisation and delivered to its team. This is what happens between your first message and the training day. To book individuals onto a scheduled course, see our open courses.

1
Tell us what you need

A 30-minute call is usually enough. We ask who will be trained, what they face and what you want to be different afterwards.

2
We send a proposal

Within a few days you receive a written proposal: the programme, the trainers, the format and the fee.

3
We build the programme

Once you confirm, we write the exercises around your organisation: interview scenarios on your issues, crisis exercises on your risks. Every trainer is briefed before day one. Where you are building a whole communication team, we start by assessing people against what each role needs.

4
We deliver and report

On site anywhere in the world or live online, in many languages. Every participant is coached individually and leaves ready for the real thing, and looking forward to it. Afterwards you receive a written report on each person and on the team, with recommendations for next steps.

Our work in energy

Saudi Aramco: a communication training academy for 250 staff

We mapped the skills every communication, public relations and government affairs role needed, then trained more than 250 people with a faculty of over 15 international specialists in a programme Public Affairs Asia named highly commended.

PETRONAS: a live crisis simulation across four time zones

Managers in Malaysia, Canada, Indonesia and Europe faced one crisis in real time, with ambush interviews, simulated social media and news bulletins testing whether strategy, systems and people held together.

COTCO: a bilingual pipeline crisis simulation

We media trained the spokespeople of two pipeline companies, then ran a rolling pipeline crisis live online in French and English.

Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority: communication training for the regulator

We train the authority's staff in corporate and crisis communication, an ongoing relationship on the regulatory side of the sector.

What energy clients say

“The crisis simulation made us ask what could actually go wrong and whether we were ready. We left with clear actions, and I feel far more confident that we can handle a live incident with the media at the door.”
R.M., Head of Corporate Communications, global oil major, Africa
“The trainer had done the job on both sides of the camera, and it showed. Every exercise was tailored to our operations, and by the end our engineers could explain a technical incident calmly and in plain language.”
A.S., Communications Director, national oil and gas company, Gulf
“Very enlightening course for corporate communicators. Also, a good refresher for those in the system. I mostly enjoyed the creativity training where we got to analyse different campaigns, as well as guidelines for crisis management.”
